How it works

Five minutes a day that really add up

Lessons that feel like a game

Five minutes a day: you choose, put words in order, match and type. You earn XP, keep your streak going and hit your daily goal.

Real-life phrases

Learn what people actually say, with natural voices, slow audio and a story at the end of every unit.

Speak up with confidence

Say the phrases out loud and your iPhone checks your pronunciation instantly. The audio isn’t saved.

Remember what you learn

The words you struggle with come back in reviews. If you get stuck, “I don’t know” shows you the answer and makes a note of it.

Learn even without signal

On the subway, on a plane or up a mountain: keep doing lessons, see your friends and your city with the latest data, and everything you do is sent automatically once you’re back online. Your progress is never lost.

Placement test

Already know some? Take the placement test and start at your level

No need to repeat what you already know. The Parlumi placement test checks every level from A1 to C2 and adapts as you go: get it right and it moves up; slip up and it stops. In a few minutes you know where to start.

  • Five questions per level: translate, fill in the gaps, listen, build sentences and spot the mistake.
  • Four correct answers take you to the next level; two mistakes end the test.
  • The units you skip are unlocked, and you can play them any time with all their rewards.
  • Take it when you start a course or later from your path. If you don’t beat your current level, you lose nothing.
Your avatar

Pick your avatar and make yourself at home in the city

When you start, you choose how Parlumi sees you: twenty illustrated avatars in the same style as the city’s neighbours. Rather not choose? We’ll pick one at random based on how you want us to address you.

Your avatar and name appear on your profile and in the app’s tab bar, and they’re saved to your account, so they look the same on all your devices. Change it whenever you like.

Welcome to the city of Parlumi

Illustrated map of the city of Parlumi, with its neighbours spread across streets, squares, the river and the beach

Parlumi is a small seaside city where every language is spoken. Among mountains, rivers, markets and squares live sixteen neighbours from all over the world: a traveller who collects customs, a curious boy with his magnifying glass, an artist, a cook who always has room for one more, a mentor who explains everything calmly…

They go with you through every lesson: they introduce the activities, celebrate when you get it right and cheer you on when something doesn’t work out. Each one has a story, hobbies and a way of speaking, because a language is easier to learn with real people.

The cultural traveller

Amina

Amina arrived in Parlumi on the morning ferry and decided to stay “just one more week”… three years ago. She collects recipes, greetings and customs from every corner, and her map is covered in notes. She’s with you whenever you travel: asking for directions, booking a hotel or ordering at a restaurant without fear.

The curious one

Kenji

Kenji can’t walk past anything without wondering how it works. He wanders the market with his magnifying glass and notebook, jotting down curious words, signs and expressions nobody has managed to explain to him… yet. With him you’ll discover why two words that look the same aren’t.

The artist

Nia

Nia paints the murals in Parlumi’s squares and always has paint on her hands. She says every language has its own colours, and she looks for them in songs, paintings and feelings. With her you talk about art, about how you feel and what you imagine.

The strategist

Ravi

Ravi works from the café by the harbour, laptop open and a plan for everything. He thinks twice before every step, which is why the neighbours ask for his advice when things get tricky. He helps you with professional vocabulary and the hardest exercises.

The veteran

Raúl

Raúl has travelled half the world and tells it all in detail, binoculars in hand, from the mountain viewpoint. He’s the oldest neighbour in town and also the keenest to learn: this year he’s taking on a new language. With him you chat about travel, nature and memories.

Helps you with NatureTravelStoriesConversation

The storyteller

Sofía

Sofía is the voice of Parlumi’s stories: the ones told in the library, in the square and at the end of every unit. She explains anything with an example and an anecdote, and can turn a list of words into a tale. With her you practise listening and reading.

Helps you with StoriesReadingComprehensionConversation

The athlete

Malik

Malik trains every morning on the basketball court by the beach and turns everything into a challenge: who’ll learn the most words this week? He never gives up and gets the whole neighbourhood going. With him you learn action verbs, habits and how to celebrate every step forward.

Helps you with SportChallengesHabitsMotivation

The communicator

Iris

Iris hosts Parlumi’s radio show and there’s no microphone she can’t handle. She gets around town in her wheelchair, talks to everyone and encourages the shyest to say their first sentence out loud. She’s with you for pronunciation and conversation.

Helps you with PronunciationConversationPresentationsMessages

The social one

Camila

Camila always knows where there’s a gig, a new terrace or a plan for Saturday. Her phone is full of messages and she talks the way friends really talk. With her you learn to make plans, write messages and use everyday language.

Helps you with FriendsPlansMessagesInformal language

The creative

Kai

Kai makes music in his studio in the old town and fills notebooks with ideas he almost never finishes… though some turn out brilliant. He blends design, technology and songs effortlessly. With him you talk about projects, today’s culture and informal expressions.

The professional

Clara

Clara runs a small studio in the centre of Parlumi and her diary is always in order, coffee included. She knows when to be formal and when not to, and writes emails nobody misreads. She gets you ready for meetings, interviews and formal situations.

Helps you with MeetingsInterviewsEmailsFormal register

The student

Leo

Leo studies at Parlumi’s school and is easily the most absent-minded neighbour: he leaves his backpack everywhere. He often gets things wrong, laughs and tries again, and that’s how he learns best. He’s the perfect companion for reviewing without giving up.

Helps you with StudiesReviewMistakesProgress

The family man

Marco

Marco has the biggest table in Parlumi, and there’s nearly always someone over for lunch. He cooks, looks after his family and knows every stallholder at the market. With him you learn to do the shopping and talk about family and home routines.

Helps you with FamilyCookingShoppingRoutines

The sophisticated one

Chloé

Chloé knows every gallery, bookshop and restaurant in town, and always has a recommendation. Elegant without being distant, she loves a good conversation over coffee. With her you practise a more polished register for the city, culture and going out.

Helps you with CultureFashionRestaurantsCity

The mentor

Nora

Nora taught for many years and now helps anyone who asks from her bench in the park. She listens patiently, explains without rushing and has a trick for every grammar rule. She’s the one who gives you advice and stays with you when things get hard.

The charismatic one

Sam

Sam is the life of Parlumi’s parties: when someone reaches a milestone, he’s already celebrating. He turns every mistake into a joke and every reminder into a challenge. He’s the one who cheers your streaks and gets you coming back every day.

Community

A city everyone builds together

In Parlumi you learn as a team: each week you join a neighbourhood, challenge your friends and help the city grow. Consistency counts, not your level.

How it can end up, project by project: from a wooden pier to a harbour full of life.
  • Your neighbourhood builds the city

Each week you team up with up to 20 people on a project: fixing the pier, lighting the lighthouse, opening the library… You contribute by meeting your own daily goal and, if you finish it together, you all earn gems and the place grows for the whole community.

  • Fair lightning duels

60 seconds in which each of you plays with the words you’ve already learned, so it doesn’t matter who is further ahead: accuracy and speed are what count. And in the weekly challenge, whoever meets their daily goal on more days wins.

  • Friends ranking and titles that never go down

Compare yourself with your friends by XP, by consistency or by how much you’ve improved since last week. And every week you help your neighbourhood brings you closer to a new title, from Visitor to Mayor of Parlumi, that you never lose.

  • Friends by @username, without exposing your data

Add friends by their @username, with their code or by scanning their QR. Search works only by @username, never by name or email, and you can hide from search whenever you like.

Friends, duels and neighbourhoods need a free account. You can stop taking part in neighbourhoods at any time.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Your privacy comes first

No ads and no tracking in the app. You can use the app without an account and delete everything whenever you want.

Is Parlumi free?

Yes. It’s a free download on the App Store with no ads. You can try the first lessons without creating an account.

Which languages can I learn?

Spanish, English, French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Catalan, Dutch and Swedish, from any of the others and also from Polish, Finnish, Ukrainian or Turkish: the app speaks 13 languages. Each course runs from A1 to C2 across 72 units.

How does the placement test work?

It asks up to five questions per level, starting at A1. Four correct answers move you up; two mistakes stop the test. You start at the first level you don’t pass, and the earlier units are unlocked.

Can I retake the placement test?

Yes, from the lesson path of each language. If your result is below where you already are, your progress stays the same.

Can I change my avatar?

Yes, from your profile. Your avatar and name are saved to your account and synced across devices.

Do I need an account?

Not to get started. To save your progress and sync it, create a free account with Sign in with Apple or with an email and password. You can delete it at any time.

What is the city of Parlumi and how do neighbourhoods work?

It’s the community side of Parlumi: everyone builds the same city together. Each week you join a neighbourhood of up to 20 people working on a project in one part of the city, such as the harbour or the lighthouse. You contribute by meeting your own daily goal, so your level doesn’t matter. If the neighbourhood finishes the project, everyone who contributed earns gems and the place grows for everyone. Your title, from Visitor to Mayor of Parlumi, never goes down.

What can my friends and my neighbourhood see about me?

Accepted friends see your name, avatar, streak, weekly XP and the flags of your courses. In your neighbourhood, people only see your @username, your avatar and the days you contributed that week. Your email is never shown. People can only find you by your @username (or add you with your code or QR), and you can hide from search, block anyone or stop taking part in neighbourhoods. There’s no chat: neighbourhoods only have cheers like “Let’s go!” or “Thanks!”.
